If you've been following along, you'll know my sunflowers really took a hit.
Well, we hit back.
Softly, of course.
The seven-foot fence is up, and I am pleased to report that while deer are technically capable of jumping that high, they have (thus far) decided not to. I appreciate their cooperation in this matter.
The flowers have finally had a chance to recover, and I've made some very interesting discoveries. For a Year One experiment, I couldn't have designed a better one myself. Thank you Lord.
It turns out some sunflower varieties do not appreciate being used as a woodland snack bar.
Mammoth Grey? Toast.
White Lite? Donzo.
Teddy Bear, however, got knocked down and got back up again. Ring of Fire is making a comeback, and Twilight Zone appears to have taken the deer attack as constructive criticism. Honestly, I think those plants giggled and said "thank you" when they got chomped because they're coming back beautifully.
In fact, my first Twilight Zone blooms are expected any day now.
At the moment, we have a few blooms getting ready to fulfill their life's purpose, four more beds growing along nicely, and this weekend I'll plant the final bed of the season. If all goes according to plan, that one should be blooming sometime in October.
Which brings me to an important public service announcement:
Start thinking about your fall tailgates and watch parties.
Velvet Queen gives gorgeous deep red blooms, and White Lite produces bright white flowers. Whether you're cheering for your team or just looking for an excuse to put flowers on the table, Thistle Hill should have something blooming for you.
Assuming, of course, the deer continue honoring our ceasefire agreement.
